The Assessment
The first step in assisting your child is a full developmental assessment to identify as clearly as possible the underlying causes of your child’s difficulties.
Our 2-3 hour Neuro-Developmental Assessment looks at the underlying capacities needed for ease of academic learning. These include:
- Spatial orientation
- Body geography
- Balance
- Laterality
- Gross motor coordination
- Fine motor coordination
- Visual perception skills
- Neurological maturity
The assessment also includes:
- Standardised testing of reading, spelling, mathematics, writing, auditory analysis and auditory sequential memory skills are also included in the assessment process as required.
- Additional testing for auditory processing disorders may be recommended if necessary. See Auditory Processing Therapy.
- A full developmental history obtained prior to the assessment appointment.
- A referral form for the child’s teacher to describe the exact nature of the child’s difficulties at school.
What form does the assessment take?
Most of the assessment takes the form of games and movement activities. Children can get a bit apprehensive if they hear they are going to have a test but following this assessment most children report they never knew a test could be so much fun!
What are you looking for?
We are looking for the underlying causes of your child’s learning difficulties. Educational research in recent years has discovered that immaturities or developmental delays in any of the above capacities can contribute to learning difficulties.
How do I get the results of this assessment?
Parent Feedback Session
The results of our assessment will be given to you at a parent feedback session. Your child is not present at this appointment so that we can freely discuss our findings and recommendations. We highly recommend that both parents attend this session.
The Report
A written report summarising all our findings and recommendations will be mailed to you at a later date.
