Supporting Calm, Regulation & Sensory Integration
WHAT IS SPD?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty receiving, processing, and responding appropriately to sensory information.
This can affect:
-
Sight
-
Sound
-
Touch
-
Taste
-
Smell
-
Balance
SPD difficulties present as:
-
Over-sensitive or under-sensitive to sensory input
-
Easily overwhelmed by everyday environments
-
Struggle with emotional regulation
-
Experience challenges with coordination, behaviour, attention, or learning
Sensory processing difficulties are often seen in children with developmental or neurological differences and can impact everyday functioning.
How Can We Help?
It is understood that, in children with Sensory Processing Disorder, the central nervous system may have difficulty accurately recognising, organising, and responding to sensory information from both the body and the surrounding environment.
At the Developmental Learning Centre, we use the Integrated Listening Therapy (iLS) to support nervous system regulation, sensory integration, and overall development.

Integrated Listening Therapy (iLS)
Supporting Nervous System Regulation
Stress, anxiety, or trauma can activate the nervous system into a fight, flight, or freeze response.
When the body remains in this defensive state, it can affect:
-
Sensory processing
-
Emotional regulation
-
Attention and learning
-
Tolerance to everyday sensory experiences
This contributes to:
-
Sensory overload
-
Increased sensitivity to sound, touch, or movement
-
Emotional dysregulation and anxiety
How iLS Works
Integrated Listening Therapy is a multi-sensory programme designed to stimulate and strengthen neural pathways involved in:
-
Sensory processing
-
Communication
-
Learning and higher cognitive functioning
-
Emotional regulation and self-regulation
The programme also supports activation of the parasympathetic nervous system through stimulation of the vagus nerve, helping the body move toward a calmer and more regulated state.
The Vestibular & Cochlear System
iLS works through stimulation of the:
-
Vestibular System (balance and movement)
-
Cochlear System (hearing and sound processing)
Alongside vision, these systems help the brain:
-
Organise sensory input
-
Integrate information from touch, hearing and vision
-
Interpret sound
-
Maintain balance and coordinated movement
-
Coordinate eye movements
Together, they form an interconnected network essential for learning, regulation, and everyday functioning.
