What causes learning and behavioural difficulties in children?

Accepted Answer

There can be many contributing factors that can cause learning or behavioural difficulties , such as genetic, environmental and neurological factors. Immaturities in the underlying neurodevelopmental foundations — such as retained reflexes, an underdeveloped vestibular (balance) system, or difficulties processing sound are one of the links and act as invisible barriers to learning, focus, and emotional regulation, even when a child is trying their hardest.

Do you offer autism (ASD) assessments?

Accepted Answer

We don't provide a formal autism diagnosis, but many families come to us after an autism diagnosis, or while waiting for one, to address related sensory hypersensitivity, language delay, and dysregulation through our Developmental Movement Assessment and Integrated Listening Therapy. These look at the underlying neurodevelopmental foundations that often contribute to autistic related symptoms.

Do I need a diagnosis before coming to the Developmental Learning Centre?

Accepted Answer

No. You don't need a formal diagnosis and you don't need to be on a waitlist to get started.  Our clinic offers The Learning Disability Assessment , which can diagnose Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia , and are other assessments look at the underlying foundations first, and are beneficial whether or not a previous diagnosis has been given.

Is medication the only option for ADHD or learning difficulties?

Accepted Answer

No. Medication is one option, and for some children it plays an important role alongside other support. Addressing the underlying neurodevelopmental foundations can create lasting change at the root, rather than only managing symptoms. It's a conversation worth having with your doctor and our team together.

Can you help with dyslexia , dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia as well as ADHD?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Firstly , the Learning Disability Assessment  that we offer can formally diagnose dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia, but  even if your child already has a formal diagnosis , including ADHD , dyspraxia, sensory or auditory processing disorder, we can look at the underlying  neurodevelopmental foundations through the Developmental Movement and iLs Auditory Assessment regardless of which label applies, and then offer therapies to help

What's the difference between the Developmental Movement Assessment and the iLs Auditory Assessment?

Accepted Answer

The Developmental Movement Assessment looks at physical and neurological foundations like reflexes, balance, and coordination. The iLs Auditory Assessment looks specifically at how your child processes and makes sense of what they hear — which affects reading, focus, and communication.

My child is on a long assessment waitlist elsewhere. Can you still help?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many families come to us while waiting for a paediatrician or specialist assessment, looking for support in the meantime. Our assessments and therapies don't require a formal diagnosis to begin.

How soon will we see a difference?

Every child is different, but many families notice meaningful changes in focus, reading, speech, or emotional regulation within months of starting therapy — some report noticeable change within weeks.
